The Viewing Tower
Nestled within a cluster of eucalyptus trees near the renowned Great Ride at Avondale, the Viewing Tower stands tall, stretching 38 meters into the sky. Its presence becomes apparent as one approaches Rathdrum, with the tower’s pinnacle emerging above the surrounding foliage.
The Viewing Tower is a remarkable feat of timber construction, employing cutting-edge glulam beams that rival the structural strength of steel. This innovative use of engineered wood showcases the most modern techniques in wooden architecture. Moreover, the wood utilised in both the Viewing Tower and the Treetop Walk is sourced locally from Avondale Forest Park, emphasising its Irish origin.
To reach the Viewing Tower, one must first embark on the treetop walk. Emerging from the tunnel, you find yourself at the base of the tower. Ascending gradually along a spiral ramped boardwalk, nestled within the forest, the walk maintains a gentle incline of no more than 6 degrees. This design ensures full accessibility for wheelchair users and those with strollers, offering resting points on each level.
As you journey upward, remain attentive to the presence of the Great Spotted Woodpecker family, whose nest resides in one of the nearby eucalyptus trees. Additionally, be prepared to encounter diverse wildlife and flora, while being treated to breathtaking panoramas as the heights steadily increase.
After completing ten gentle circuits on the spiraling path, you will find yourself standing on the circular viewing platform at the pinnacle of the tower. From this vantage point, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking 360° panoramic vista that stretches across Avondale Forest Park, the picturesque Vale of Avoca, the majestic Wicklow Mountains, and even beyond.
As you gaze down, you’ll witness the awe-inspiring sight of some of the mightiest trees in all of Ireland. Keep an eye out for Red Kites soaring above, as they have been reintroduced to the area and are flourishing in Avondale. Remember to secure your phone or camera tightly while capturing memorable photographs.
For an added thrill, you have the option to descend back to the ground via the giant spiral slide housed within the Viewing Tower. Alternatively, you can choose to continue your journey down the ramped boardwalk, gradually returning to the forest floor.
